Star Fox follows Fox McCloud, son of the legendary pilot James McCloud, as he leads the mercenary team Star Fox on a dangerous mission to liberate the Lylat star system. The villainous scientist Andross, exiled from the Cornerian military for conducting illegal experiments, has seized control of the system, and General Pepper has called on Fox and his crew to stop him.

Alongside teammates Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad, Fox fights his way planet by planet through Andross's forces toward a final confrontation. The remake expands significantly on the original Star Fox 64 narrative, adding a new prologue mission starring Fox's father James McCloud, expanded mission briefing scenes between stages that deepen the lore and character relationships, and a brand-new underwater level not found in the original game. Fully voiced dialogue and all-new cinematic cutscenes are woven throughout the entire campaign.

The primary vehicle is the Arwing, a fast aerospace fighter armed with laser blasters and smart bombs. Core Arwing maneuvers include the barrel roll (to deflect incoming fire), the somersault (to flip behind pursuing enemies), a mid-air brake to slow and dodge, and a boost for added thrust.

Beyond the Arwing, the remake also features the Landmaster tank for ground-based missions and the Blue Marine submarine for underwater combat including the new underwater level added exclusively to this remake.

• A new prologue mission centered on Fox McCloud's father, James McCloud, giving background to the story before the main campaign begins. The remake also adds expanded mission briefing cutscenes between stages, fully voiced and cinematic, that flesh out the characters and worlds of the Lylat system in ways the original N64 game never did.
• A brand-new underwater level, not present in Star Fox 64 or any prior version of this story, has been added to the campaign.
• The entirely new Challenge Mode, which layers fresh objectives on top of completed stages, and the new 4-vs-4 online Battle Mode are also additions that have no equivalent in the original game.
• The orchestral score is newly composed, and the character designs have been reimagined with a more detailed, animalistic style compared to both Star Fox 64 and the Star Fox Zero aesthetic.
